an oriental twist
Tuesday, March 21, 2006 .::.
Despite efforts to boost the image and cleanliness of public toilets, many people are still not satisfied with the state of public loos, according to an environment ministry survey.

When it comes to answering nature's call, most want a clean loo. And efforts have been made on that front, with upgraded toilets and various campaigns on good toilet habits.

But a recent survey of more than 1,000 people found that about 75% are still not satisfied with the state of public toilets, even though many feel that overall, the cleanliness has improved, compared to three years ago.

"We still have a long way to go, unless everybody cooperates," lamented one member of the public.

"I would say there's a lot more work to be done because it's still very dirty," said another.

"While toilets' conditions have improved, expectations of the quality of life has risen faster. The other thing is that toilet cleaners are not trained professionally. But with the job redesign programme by WDA (Workforce Development Agency), the Restroom Association and the World Toilet College, they will conduct courses to upgrade the cleaners and hopefully, we will see cleaner toilets," said Jack Sim, founder of Restroom Association of Singapore.

6 in 10 were positive about the current state of the environment compared to three years ago. Respondents also indicated they were willing to play a part in energy and water conservation.

7 in 10 say they are more willing to pay for energy efficient appliances.

The survey was conducted from December 2005 to January this year on a random sample of residents and non-residents aged 15 and above.

The Environment Ministry says that it will use the survey results to plan and evaluate its policies and programmes.

My Opinion:

I am one of those who are still not satisfied with the cleanliness of public toilets. If you are someone close to me, you will know that I only visit selected toilets which are clean and dry. Some examples are like Hotel toilets, Paragon, Marina Square and less than 5 of them. Even the common level toilets at major shopping malls are still as dirty, either because the public dont take care of it or the cleaners are not doing a proper job enough. Some even have shit sticking on the sides of the bowl, if not urine spills or drops all over the bowl and on the floor. Well, the latter ONLY refer to the gents but the ladies, as of what my sis told me, that some people dont flush the bowls after using, if not not "aiming" well enough for the asshole to shit directly into the bowl.

However for such cases, we have to really cooperate with the cleaning services company. Those old aunties and uncles are the ones who are cleaning those stuff which we sometimes call it "Dirty Job". Just imagine that you are working with a toilet cleaning company and you have to report to work everyday just to CLEAN TOILETS??? I bet many of us will not want to have that kind of job even with a high-salary. Sometimes I really pity those cleaners when I visit the toilets and see them cleaning those super dirty toilets.

So as public toilet users, we have to play our part in keeping the public toilets clean and dry. And that will make the standard of living higher, meeting our individual expectations of public toilet cleanliness and also making life visiting public toilets a better one.

ALWAYS REMEMBER TO FLUSH AFTER USE AND KEEP THE TOILETS CLEAN AND DRY.
